Nehemiah was cup bearer to King Artaxerxes. A Cup-bearer is responsible for serving the King wine.  Also the Cup-bearer also makes sure the wine is safe to drink IE no poison in it. This often meant drinking the wine before the King drank it. It was a very senior security detail position.
